Ask one of our supervisors how they learned to read a set of plans, and there's a good chance the story starts on a CSCI jobsite years ago. Most of the people running our jobsites today started their careers by working on them. It's one of the things we're proudest of as a company.
There's a real difference between knowing how a job is supposed to go and knowing how it actually goes. Someone who has set block in the August heat knows how long that takes and what the crew needs to be successful. Someone who has worked a pour knows what has to be right before the truck shows up, and what happens when it isn't. That kind of knowledge is hard to teach in a classroom and impossible to fake once you're standing on a site.
Moving up at CSCI usually starts well before anyone has the title. It’s a crew member catching a problem before it gets pointed out to them, or taking the time to show a newer guy how something works. People notice that kind of thing here, because most of the people doing the noticing were spotted the same way.
Bruce Bennett is a good example. He started with CSCI as a Level 2 Super over 11 years ago, and today he is CSCI’s Area Manager for Palm Beach County, overseeing about 16 projects from Jupiter to Boca Raton. By his own admission, “I was trained under some of the best supervision there is, and I’ve made my way up through the ranks to Area Manager.” He’s been in his current role for 4 years and uses the training he received on CSCI jobsites every day.
Supervisors who came up through the crews remember who took the time to explain things to them, and many of them do the same for whoever is newest on their site. For the builders we work with, it means the person running their job understands it from every angle, because at some point that person has stood in just about every spot on the site.
It also gives the newest person on a crew something to look toward. When the person running the site started out right where you are, the path forward is easy to picture. We think that's a big part of why so many people stay with us as long as they do (and recommend their family and friends to the company, too).
Every shell we build is only as good as the people on that site, and we'd rather grow those people ourselves. That’s the CSCI Standard.
